Our Sessions on Closing & Carrying Forward
Closings are very important because they “seal” the container. They help participants shift to meaning making about what they have learned, have been challenged by, and about how they are feeling.
We use closings at the end of a day or a gathering -- often an inspiration, forgiveness or affirmation offered through poetry reading, chanting, singing -- to support folks in transitioning into an evening activity or back home.
We also use the following sessions to close our program, as a way to help the participants ground in practices, learnings, and community that they can carry with them outside of our liberated zone. We hope these sessions help to ease that cultural transition from liberated zone to home organization.
Description: This activity is facilitated at or toward the end of a program and is used to reflect on their collective journey and on the learnings, tools and practices that participants can continually draw on in their leadership work.
Process: 140 minutes
Description: A teachback is a tool we use to practice embodying the knowledge we have learned and then sharing it with our communities with the goal of inviting in curiosity and transformation. It helps us build interdependence and shared understanding. This tool can be used in casual experiences – as in, asking a volunteer at the end of a session to explain the session’s core concepts to the group in their own works. It can also be used more formally/expansively – as in, asking a participant to lead the facilitation of a previously learned concept at a future gathering. Practices like the teachback are critical to a leader's development because they support continued learning/embodiment and boost confidence.
Teachbacks are helpful to infuse at random intervals during training, especially if you are working with a group over a long period of time. This helps ensure that leaders are understanding not only the concepts as they are taught, but how they build upon one another and offer transformational ways of being. We encourage facilitation teams and the participants to take this tool back and facilitate teachback moments with other staff or leaders in their organization and community.
Process: minimum 2 hours with prep and debrief session
Description: So often, we are busy with frenzied activity that doesn’t necessarily add up to the time and energy we’ve put in. This session introduces participants to the Purpose/Outcomes/Process (POP) framework created by Leslie Sholl Jaffe & Randy Alford and introduced to us by Rockwood that helps us “create more real results...with less effort...” We offer POP as a way for women identified people of color to bring their most full, liberated selves into the world by moving with more intentional, purposeful, and strategic action.
Process: 90 minutes
Description: All the tools and exercises we are using are meant to support you and your work and to be shared with others - with your team, with your organization, or with your networks. This document is intended to help you think about what you want to share and how (both tools and exercises as well as learnings and insights) - in addition to thinking about how you want to incorporate your learning into your daily practices.
Description: Most of us find ourselves feeling overwhelmed at times - too much to do, too little time. In this exercise, you will learn how to say no - in a way that feels aligned with your purpose and your values.
Description: An important tool for addressing stress and burnout is to manage your sphere of control. A section of a poem attributed to theologian Reinhold Neibuhr is widely known as the “serenity prayer” associated with Alcoholics Anonymous:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
This approach - including recognizing and accepting the things beyond our control, can be very helpful in letting go of feelings of frustration and overwhelm, and allow you to focus on the things within your purview.
Process: about 30 min
